The Owl Centre’s highly experienced and qualified School Counsellors in Kent can provide a range of services, as set out below:

CBT/Solution Focused Counselling and/or Psychoeducation

This is a brief and time-limited intervention (typically 6-12 weeks) which focuses on problem-solving a specific issue or concern such as anger management, anxiety, friendship issues, etc. It is a directive approach where problems are discussed directly and education and skills training may form a large part of the intervention.

Arts and/or Play-based Counselling

This is a less-directive form of therapy which may be short or long term depending on individual needs. It uses metaphor and imagery to process and resolve issues that may be unconscious, or that the child finds difficult to speak about or address directly. Tools used may include paint, clay, sand-tray, puppets, storytelling and bibliotherapy.

Draw & Talk Therapy

This is a time-limited (12 x 30 min) arts-based intervention that is less intensive than Art-based Counselling and is suitable where the level of concern is suspected to be low, where time/space/resources are limited, or where a parent/carer is resistant to mental health intervention.

Therapeutic Story Writing

This is a time-limited (12 x 60 min) arts-based intervention that can be delivered 1:1 or in small groups. It uses metaphor to process and resolve issues through a writer’s workshop format that simultaneously builds literacy skills. It is suitable both for pupils who already enjoy writing stories, as well as those who struggle with literacy and do not see themselves as writers. Literacy development and support is embedded in this intervention so that children not only have the opportunity to work through personal difficulties but also build their confidence as readers and writers.

Restorative Justice Conferences/Circles

Restorative Justice conferences provide a formal process for resolving interpersonal conflict which may be occurring between pupils, staff, families, or any combination of these, in a way which promotes personal accountability and community building. Restorative Circles provide a similar process for resolving conflict when larger groups, for example whole classrooms or peer groups, are involved. Both are highly structured and highly supportive interventions that focus on the reparation of harm to restore relationships rather than on punishment which tends to destroy relationships.

Parent Groups

Research shows that parent training is one of the most successful evidence-based interventions for supporting the wellbeing of children and young people, particularly those exhibiting challenging behaviour. Incredible Years, Love & Logic, and Multi-family Groups in Schools are all evidence-based interventions for building parenting skills and supporting parents and carers to better meet the needs of the children they care for – where they differ is in time, intensity, and resources required. Please contact us to discuss which parent group intervention may be most suitable for your needs and target group.

Developmental Literacy and/or Numeracy Assessment

A developmental assessment identifies where a child is on a continuum of literacy or numeracy skills development, highlighting both achievements to date and next steps. It is an assessment that is independent of age or year level and can help to identify which developmental step may be acting as a barrier to progress. The child is not given a mark or grade but is supported in understanding their journey along the continuum through a ‘Supporting Teaching and Learning’ report that is shared with staff and carers.

Making Space for Learning: Trauma Training for Educators

A ½ day facilitated training designed to give anyone who works with children important trauma-focused information about how student learning and behaviour is impacted by trauma and how educators and support staff can help students develop a greater sense of safety at school and begin to build new emotional regulation skills. The training uses materials and research from the US, UK, and Australia.
