Private Independent Dramatherapy Services in Oxfordshire.
Our dramatherapists offer private dramatherapy services in Oxfordshire.
“Dramatherapy is a type of psychotherapy which can be non-verbal (as well as verbal) and offers a creative form of expression using drama and techniques to facilitate a change of perspective/behaviour, to adapt to disability, to deal with difficult issues and to promote personal growth and mental health.” (BADTH)
Like other Creative Arts therapies, Dramatherapy provides a gentle space for play and exploration. It does not rely on cognitive ability and therefore addresses individual needs at different levels. For example, those who have difficulties with verbal expression can experiment with self-expression using movement, sound or role-play.
Difficult feelings can be explored safely using movement, sound, objects, story-telling, enactment and games. This enables a child to develop new coping skills, and encourages their confidence to play and have fun. These techniques also enable children and young people to develop positive socialisation skills, self-esteem and emotional literacy.
Specific reasons for referral may include:
- Communication difficulties
- Emotional distress and behavioural needs
- Relationship difficulties
- Withdrawn or isolated children
- Low self esteem
- Children in need or at risk
- Challenging behaviour
Dramatherapy sessions can take place in schools, or at an allocated centre. The Owl Centre offers
1:1 sessions with a child, or sessions with the child and family/carer. Each session lasts for up to 50 minutes and is tailored to the needs of the individual child. The sessions will generally include movement, stories, enactments, play, percussion, drawing, and songs. Children do not need to be able to ‘act’ to come to Dramatherapy as the work is not geared towards performance.
