Carly Atkinson BSc (Hons), MSc, BDA, HCPC registered

Carly graduated with a BSc (Hons) in Nutrition & Dietetics in 2005 and went on to gain an MSc in Advanced Dietetic Practice in 2012. She is a member of the British Dietetic Association (BDA) and the Health and Social Care Professions Council (HCPC) and has been working in the NHS for the past 13 years, specialising in Eating Disorders, Mental Health and Learning Disabilities. She is a member of the BDA Specialist Groups in Mental Health and Autism and chaired the South West Eating Disorders Dietitians forum prior to going on maternity leave in 2016. She guest lectures post-graduate students at the University of Birmingham and provides workshops and training sessions for local parents and Early Years Settings on Early Years Nutrition.

In her NHS role working with adults, Carly is passionate about raising awareness about the complex nutritional needs of those with a learning disability and has been involved in providing training and education for carers of adults with a learning disability to support a culture of Eating Well. She is also heavily involved in the menu development and catering provisions at all Trust In-patient sites and as such has a very good working knowledge of providing a nourishing and palatable diet to those with special requirements such as allergies and intolerances.

Carly has a particular interest in working with fussy, disordered and restrictive eaters and supporting the particular challenges involved for those with Autistic Spectrum Disorders. This led her to undertake a course in ‘Sensory Issues in relation to feeding difficulties’ and a ‘Dietitians Masterclass in Autism’ and she now integrates techniques such as the SOS approach, Food Chaining and Behavioural work into her sessions to support families to introduce a broader range of foods into a child’s diet. The challenge of making a ‘beige’ diet nutritionally adequate is one of her commonest requests – and usually we get there with a bit of patience, creativity and support!

Carly has 2 young children of her own so understands the need to make recommendations realistic and workable for everyday life which can be hectic and unpredictable. There’ll be no Kale, Wheatgrass, Mega doses of supplements or Bizarre Diets. Information provided is evidence-based on the latest research and she can provide recipes, meal plans, or just some reassurance, to ensure your child gets the most from their diet that they possibly can.
