Victoria Cowley, BA Music Degree (Hull), MA in Music Therapy (Anglia Ruskin), HCPC registered Music Therapist
I qualified as a Music Therapist from Anglia Ruskin University, Cambridge. I have had experience working with children and adults with learning disabilities, autism, PMLD and developmental delay. I have completed an Intensive Interaction training course run by Dave Hewett. Intensive Interaction is an approach to teach people with severe learning disabilities and/or autism the pre-speech fundamentals of communication such as enjoying being with another person, learning to share sequences of activity with another person, taking turns in exchanges of behaviour, using vocalisations, using and understanding non-verbal communication like eye contact, facial expressions, and developing concentration and attention. This training has influenced my music therapy work with people with autism and I often use a musical interaction approach to help to connect with people at their level and to help them to develop their communication and social skills.
I am currently working part time at a primary school for children with complex learning needs. I have worked in residential homes, schools and private practice. I am passionate about helping people with learning disabilities and autism to express themselves and to develop their full potential for social interaction and emotional well-being.
