Karen Bland MNCS (ACCRED) Dip Hyp CS, Dip Hyp PC, CC L4C
Karen trained as a Psychotherapeutic Counsellor and Hypnotherapist before gaining a certificate with Place2Be in counselling children and young people using play, creative and narrative therapy. During her training, Karen worked in the SEN department of a North London secondary school, supporting young people with SEN and BESD needs including visual and auditory impairments, and as a counsellor in a secondary school in Hackney, East London.
Karen has experience helping children and young people with Attachment Difficulties, Adverse Childhood Experiences, Disability, ASD, Psychological Trauma, Anxiety , Bereavement, Domestic Abuse and Emotional Distress .
Since 2013, Karen has been an active volunteer for Samaritans, supporting vulnerable adults and young people suffering emotional distress and suicidal thoughts. She has a keen interest in PTSD and psychological trauma as well as personality disorders and attachment difficulties.
Karen provides 1-1, non-directive, Child-Centred Creative/Play therapy sessions to children and young people aged between 3 and 16 years old. Child-Centred therapy provides a safe, unconditional, non-judgemental and accepting environment for a child or young person to process muddled feelings and adverse childhood experiences without the worry of how others may think, feel or react.
Creative activities and play offer a natural form of communication for children and young people, and enables expression of feelings and worries at a level that is right for the individual and at their own pace. Karen’s aim is for the therapy room to become a supportive environment where clients can use creative materials, sand tray, clay, puppets, role play items, games, movement and books as well as creative exercises to aid exploration of experiences and feelings. The outcomes often witnessed are a building of self-esteem, confidence and resilience, feeling more in control of their emotions and being more ready to focus and learn along with beginning to build more positive family / peer relationships.
Karen is committed to empowering children and young people, building self-esteem, autonomy and efficacy to help them begin to understand their own mind and strive toward their full potential.
