Jennifer Dando, BSc (Hons) Speech and Language Therapy, MRCSLT, HCPC Registered

Jennifer Dando, BSc (Hons) Speech and Language Therapy, MRCSLT, HCPC Registered

Since qualifying in 2009, Jennifer has worked with school-aged children in both the NHS and independently. She has a wide range of experience supporting children and young people with speech, language and social communication difficulties in primary and secondary schools. Jennifer believes it is essential that therapy supports access to learning alongside developing skills that will last through life.

Jennifer has experience assessing and delivering a variety of therapeutic interventions in the areas of speech, social communication skills, receptive and expressive language and implementing a communication friendly environment. Through assessment, Jennifer aims to identify a profile of strengths and needs and identify if specific support is needed.

Jennifer currently works as a Highly Specialist Therapist in a residential secondary specialist school for boys with Autistic Spectrum Disorder. Jennifer values the importance of working within a multidisciplinary team including parents, teachers, learning support assistants, care workers, occupational therapists, counsellors and clinical psychologists, and liaises closely with them to provide advice and strategies to develop and support young people's communication skills in all environments. Her current role has allowed Jennifer to understand the impact of speech, language and communication needs on curriculum access, building social relationships and independent living, and to find creative ways to develop these skills.

Jennifer runs social skills groups, which often incorporate Social Thinking® principles, and she also works individually with young people focusing on areas which might include: understanding non-literal language (such as sarcasm, humour, idiom), social conventions, perspective taking, conversation skills, handling teasing, improving vocabulary, and understanding the language of exam questions. She works alongside teachers to support modifications to the teaching environment and to provide support for curriculum key concepts.

Jennifer has attended a range of short courses including Social Thinking®, Oral Language Modification and Elklan and she is also one of a small number of certified providers within the UK of the Program for the Education and Enrichment of Relational Skills (PEERS) for Adolescents.
