I am a parent to two girls aged 10 and 4. My 10 year old has special educational needs and complex health needs, and attends a special school. My background is in early childhood studies and education and I have worked in various roles with children and their families, including children’s centre work which involved supporting parents in their homes and in groups with parenting issues such as sleep, behaviour or play. I found this hugely rewarding, particularly where there was a child with additional needs, as I could use my own experience as well as professional skills.
Most recently, I ran a local parent befriending service for a national charity. I was involved in the training, support and supervision of the volunteers as well as the day to day running of the service. This involved event planning and building up and promoting the new service as well as responding to the needs of the families we worked with, providing information and workshops on issues that mattered to them. This really focused my attention on how stressful it can be for parents, coming to terms with a new diagnosis or waiting for assessments, and the difference it can make to know that there are others who have been there too.
I can offer support and information on a range of issues as well as practical help with forms and grant applications. I am also available to plan and manage events on behalf of schools or organisations.
