Hilary Mawdesley, BSc (Hons) Birmingham City University, HCPC registered

Hilary Mawdesley, BSc (Hons) Birmingham City University, HCPC registeredHilary qualified as a Speech and Language Therapist from Birmingham City University in 2017. She is currently working part-time for the NHS as a Children’s SLT and has experience working in a range of settings including clinics, pre-schools, mainstream schools and special schools, working with children aged 2 – 11yrs. She is experienced in working closely with teaching staff to best support the child’s needs in an educational setting.

Six years ago, Hilary decided to change her career direction entirely. She formerly worked within police forces and then central government where she led a team of Home Office researchers and statisticians. However, due to personal circumstances, Hilary came into contact with Speech and Language Therapists and experienced the tremendous impact they can have on the confidence and wellbeing of children.

Hilary is passionate about making a difference to children with speech, language or communication difficulties. She has particular interests in working with children with speech delay or disorders and working out the best ways to engage and motivate children within therapy. She also considers it very important to involve parents in therapy to ensure the best outcomes for their child, while appreciating the day-to-day practicalities of fitting this into daily routines. She also has particular interest in working with children with social communication difficulties including those diagnosed with Autistic Spectrum Disorder. As a student, she supported children with such difficulties within mainstream school in a voluntary capacity.

Hilary has two young children at primary school and fully appreciates that different personalities and a child’s interests should strongly influence how therapy sessions are tailored, to ensure success and enjoyment!

Shayma Muqtadir - BSc (Hons) Birmingham City University. HCPC Registered.

Shayma Muqtadir - BSc (Hons) Birmingham City University. HCPC Registered.

Shayma qualified as a Speech and Language Therapist from Birmingham City University in 2015. She works part-time for the NHS as a Children’s Speech and Language Therapist and has experience working in a range of settings including clinics, pre-schools, and mainstream schools, working with children and young people aged 2 – 16 years old. She has also worked in a private educational setting with young people aged 11-19 years old with ASD, Developmental Language Disorder and stammering/cluttering. Shayma also has experience working with adults with Aphasia.

Shayma is passionate about making a difference to children/young people and adults with speech, language or communication difficulties. She understands that although therapy is important for children with speech and language difficulties, environmental strategies should also be considered when working with children and their families, and that work carried out by families is a key factor in helping to make an impact for the client and their family.

Shayma also has particular interest in working with children with social communication difficulties including those diagnosed with Autistic Spectrum Disorder. She has carried out social skills groups with students both in secondary and primary mainstream settings.

Shayma enjoys working with children and young people and is aware that motivation is key. Discovering what motivates them is important when carrying out therapy, therefore. She is passionate that intervention should be client-centred.  It is this approach - alongside her knowledge of current evidence-based practice, changes in the SEND reform and her understanding of the need for working with others - which enables her to empower her clients to live fulfilling lives.

Shayma enjoys working as part of a multi-disciplinary team and actively engages teachers, parents, carers and support workers to achieve therapy targets.
