Helen qualified as a Speech and Language Therapist in 2009, having previously completed a degree in music. Whilst training to be a Speech and Language Therapist, Helen quickly realised that her passion was for working with children with Speech, Language and Communication Needs.
Helen has worked for the NHS since qualifying and in particular enjoys working with young children and their families, to maximise their potential and to enable parents to feel empowered to support their child’s communication needs. She strongly believes that a child who is having fun is more likely to engage and make progress!
Helen is trained in the use of Makaton signing stages 1-8, Parent-Child Interaction Therapy, Non-Directive Therapy and particularly enjoys carrying out early intervention with pre-school-aged children. She also has considerable experience in working with children with delayed or disordered speech sounds, from ages 2-10. Her current role involves working with young children with complex needs and social communication difficulties, and she has a particular interest in working with children with Down’s Syndrome.
Helen’s communication skills are an area of strength and she is able to quickly build a rapport with the children she works with, which has a positive impact on outcomes. Sessions are tailored to the individual needs of the child. Involving the children, where possible, in setting realistic, functional goals is also a priority.
Helen is based in Rochester, Kent, where she can offer home, school or nursery visits for assessment and therapy to Medway, Maidstone and the surrounding areas.
